It’s not an accident, but manslaughter: Kin of doctors, who died in Maharajgunj bus-hit

Kathmandu, February 29

Family members of Dr Sandip Subedi and Dr Sunny Ananda, who died in a road accident a week ago, have called for an impartial investigation into the accident.

They made this demand at a press conference in the Capital on Monday.

“After  getting a driving licence nine years ago, the driver involved in the road traffic accident has faced action 27 times. This proves Dr Subedi and Dr Ananda got murdered,” the kin said demanding that authorities press manslaughter charges against those involved.

Doctor-mrityu-chanbinDr Bharat Kumar Yadav, Sunny’s uncle, said: The driver’s series of crimes have already come to the fore. The driver involved in the accident, proprietors of the school that were using the bus, which was more than 27 years old (a traffic rule bars operation of buses that are more than 20 years old), to carry students, and the owners of the travel agency, which owns the bus, should get punishment.

Kishor Khanal, a kin of Dr Subedi, also demanded formation of a committee for a fair probe into the case and maximum punishment against the guilty. He pointed that acts of criminal negligence like this can cause loss of many more lives.

On the occasion, speakers, including Rajesh Bhurtel, chair of National Residents’ Association, and Prabesh Bikram Singh, chair of Students’ Welfare Committee, demanded tough legal action against the guilty and compensation for the bereaved.

Dr Subedi and Dr Anand had died when the bus numbered Ba 1 Ya 43 hit them on a road close to Kanti Children’s Hospital at Maharajunja eight days ago. The two were doing MD from the Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj.
