Kathmandu cleans up Bagmati for 150 weeks

The campaign to clean Bagmati, which was started on May 19, 2015 has completed 150 weeks. A programme was organised in the capital today to mark the event.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari, who herself participated in the cleaning, graced the event and called on all to support the campaign. “The river has special significance in our rituals from birth to death. We should protected it, and hand it over safely to the new generation,” she said.

According to campaigners, waste weighing more than five tonnes has been collected from the river so far.

During the event in Guheswori, President Bhandari also inaugurated a children’s park along the banks of the Bagmati.

Former Chief Secretary Lila Mani Poudyal, one of the leaders of the campaign, said, “Everyone should also unite to clean the river and people should act as a watchdog against those polluting the river.”
