Kathmandu, June 29
Far-Western Development Region experienced four jolts in a period of half an hour on Wednesday. The quakes occurred from 2.55 pm to 3.29 pm and their magnitude ranged from 3.6 to 5. The jolts, with epicentre at Dhamena VDC of Bajhang district, left local people terrified.
A magnitude 5 jolt struck the region at 2 pm, followed by quakes of magnitude 4.2, 3.8 and 3.6 at 3.12 am, 3.28 am and 3.29 am, the National Seismological Centre informed.
According to district police, they are yet to receive details of the damage that the quakes caused. Narendra Chand, deputy superintendent of police at Bajhang district police office, said they have kept police personnel on standby.
Pointing that quakes may strike anytime, Bajhang district administration has appealed people to stay alert. Sunil Khanal, chief district officer of Bajhang, has asked people of Bajhang to take precautions and identify safe places where they could move in the event of another jolt. He said Nepal Army and Nepal Police are ready to mobilise for rescue operations.
The centre has said that the jolts that occurred in the Far-West are not aftershocks of last year’s devastating Gorkha quake.
