Kathmandu, July 14
Former prime minister and Naya Shakti Nepal coordinator Baburam Bhattarai has said frequent changes in government will harm national security.
Bhattarai said all political parties should stand together on national security issues. He said parties should have a common stance on national security policy.
Bhattarai made these remarks while addressing a national security symposium in Kathmandu on Thursday. He said national security policy should be above party and factional politics.
Bhattarai said: National security policy should neither surrender national interests nor should it anger neighbours.
Economic aspects are also a part of national security, Bhattarai said, stressing the need to embark on the fast-track of economic development and build an interdependent economy.
Restructuring of security agencies is a must for strengthening national security, the Naya Shakti leader said. He added: Only by opting for modernisation with a scientific approach, we can tackle immediate security threats.
Political stability is crucial for strengthening national security, he said, adding: For political stability, we should go for directly-elected President or directly elected chief executive.
