Rains continuing since Thursday night have caused inundation in several parts of Rupandehi district and thrown life out of gear. Some government offices and non-government organisations’ offices have also gone under water.
In the last 24 hours, Bhairahawa of Rupandehi district has received record rainfall of this rainy season in the country (123 mm), the Department of Weather Forecast said.
Incessant rains have inundated about 25 houses in Patkhauli VDC-5, Rupandehi district, Rupandehi district police office said.
In Basantapur VDC-4 also, several houses have gone under water and locals have climbed on trees to save their lives.
Rescue efforts are underway, Rameshwor Karki, spokesperson for the police office, said, adding that there have not been any human casulaties so far.
Karki told Onlinekhabar: Water level has gone up in Rohini River in eastern parts of Bhairahawa. Some villagers there have gone under water. Rescue of the victims is going on. Soon we will rescue them and take them to safe places.
Dhan Bahadur Thapa, sub-inspector at the Dhakdhai area police office, said: Around 25 houses located on the banks of Rohini in Patkhauli VDC-5 are under water due to flooding. Efforts to take the stranded locals to safe places are underway.
Weather expert Samir Shrestha said rainfall may continue for some time to come. Improvement in weather in Western parts of the country, including Bhairahawa, will take some time, he said.
Rains are like to subside from Sunday onwards. On an average, Bhairahawa receives 545.6 mm rainfall every July.
So far this July, Bhairahawa has received 389.20 mm rainfall, according to the division.
