Kathmandu, July 27
Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre, which are preparing to form a new government in place of the KP Oli-led caretaker administration, have reached an understanding to hold local elections in about eight months from now.
Top leaders of the two parties, at a meeting held at Singhadurbar, held discussions on conducting civic elections on Wednesday.
A top leader told Onlinekhabar: At the meeting, the two parties reached an understanding to start preparations for conducting local elections in Falgun-Chaitra (mi-April to mid-May) right after forming a new government.
The Oli-led government, reduced to a caretaker status now, had proposed holding local elections in Mangsir (around mid-December). But Congress and the Maoist party have stood against this proposal.
In the existing political scenario, Prachanda is likely to become Prime Minister in a few days as per an understanding between the Maoist party and the NC. The two parties have agreed on conducting local elections only after restructuring of the local level as per the new Constitution.
The meeting also held discussions on scientific and practical restructuring of local bodies.
