In course of market monitoring, a team from the Ministry of Supplies found date-expired ‘consumables’ at BigMart Supermarket in Kalopul, Kathmandu, on Monday. The team sealed the department store’s four shutters.

But the supermarket’s employee, Gopal Thapa, broke the seal and opened a shutter on Tuesday morning, in the name of taking out the keys of his motorcycle. Aware of this suspicious activity, local people reported the matter to the Department of Supplies Management and Consumer Welfare Protection.

Laxman Shrestha, the department’s director, said the department took the employee under control and interrogated him.

Shrestha said: The government had sealed the mart after finding that it was selling date-expired consumables. Breaking the government seal is a crime.

The department is writing to the Metropolitan Police Complex seeking legal action against the mart’s proprietor as per the Public Offence Act.
