The main opposition Nepali Congress on Thursday issued a whip to its lawmakers to compulsorily attend the Parliament meeting scheduled for Sunday. At the same time, the party has directed its lawmakers, who are out of the Kathmandu Valley, to return to the valley without delay.
Meanwhile, Speaker Onsari Gharti has postponed the Parliament meeting scheduled for Thursday till Sunday. The plan was to present the impeachment motion filed against (suspended) CIAA Chief Commissioner Lok Man Singh Karki. In the wake of developments centred around the motion, Speaker Gharti has postponed her scheduled visit to Switzerland.
Preparations are afoot to present the impeachment motion at Sunday’s House meeting.
Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, UML chief whip, said the party has directed its lawmakers to return to the Capital and issued the whip, for it needs to hold discussions on the motion. All UML lawmakers should participate in the process of passing the impeachment motion effectively, Dhakal told Onlinekhabar.
On Sunday, lawmakers had registered the impeachment motion against Karki in the Parliament Secretariat. A total of 157 lawmakers from the UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre have signed on the motion proposed by Maoist lawmaker Mahendra Bahadur Shahi and seconded by Dhakal.
