Min Bahadaur Bham’s Kalo Pothi (read review), Nepal’s nomination for the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category for this year’s Academy Awards, is out of the race for the Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earlier today said it has short-listed nine films, out of the 85 titles it received for the award. The nine films shortlisted are from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Iran, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Germany’s submission, Toni Erdmann, directed by Maren Ade, is considered a strong contender for the award as it won the Best European Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress  and Best Screenplay titles at the recently-held European Film Awards.

The list will be further shortened to five, and will be announced on January 24, along with the final nominations for all categories.

The award ceremony will take place on February 26 in Los Angeles.
