Rhino poached after three years: National Park steps up security

Chitwan, April 13

Security has been beefed up along the buffer zone outside the Chitwan National Park (CNP) following the killing of a rare one-horned rhino last week.

A rhino was killed and its horn taken away at a time when conservation officials prepared to mark a third consecutive ‘Zero Poaching Year’. The male rhino was sustained bullet injuries on the head and was left in a pool of blood inside the Hariyali Madhyawarti Community Forest at Jagatpur on the night of April 7.
As part of the security arrangement, three security base camps have been added while regular patrolling has been carried out on nine vehicles (five added recently), said information officer at the CNP Nurendra Aryal.
A total of 57 permanent security posts are now in operation, he said. Night patrolling has been intensified particularly near habitats of rhinos and at areas where the animals move about, said Chief of Srijung battalion Madhav Thapa, the commander of the Nepali Army based inside the park.
