Biratnagar, July 9
For the first time after being promoted to the status of only metropolitan city in Province 1, Biratnagar on Sunday morning welcomed its new mayor.
As per the results announced late night yesterday, Nepali Congress candidate Bhim Parajuli has been elected the mayor of major trade hub in eastern Nepal.
He defeated two alliances of other four major parties to make the win.
The CPN-UML and Nepal Democratic Forum, and the CPN-Maoist Centre and Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal had formed alliances against the Congress party in the city.
But, UML mayoral candidate Binod Dhakal’s 17,321 votes were too low to defeat Parajuli, who secured 23,003 votes.
Likewise, the FSF-N’s Umesh Yadav received 14,158 votes.
In the race for deputy mayor as well, the Congress turned victorious. Indira Karki polled 20,146 votes to defeat Namita Neupa of CPN-MC (11,523 votes) and Suchi Chaudhary of NDF (10,536).
