CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, who is being tipped as the next prime minister, proposes that the country’s money laundering law be changed to let businesspersons invest black money in the productive sector.
Oli says the current law has also not been much effective to book real culprits of money laundering.
During an interaction with the newly elected executive committee of Nepal Chamber of Commerce at the party headquarters in Dhumbarahi of Kathmandu today, Oli said the government should let businesspersons make the property obtained from undisclosed sources public, just for one time.
“I wish the hidden money could be invested. It could help idle people get employed. Maybe we can think about it?,” he proposed, “We can let them launder underground money so that the government can collect cash from them.”
Many industrialists in the country have been demanding that they be allowed to document their property obtained from undisclosed sources.
Experts, however, say changing anti-money laundering laws is quite difficult as they have to comply with the international standard too.
