Kathmandu, November 14
The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of Parliament on Thursday decided to formulate a law with a provision of giving retirement to civil servants after they complete 60 years of age. Currently, the retirement age for civil servants is 58 years.
A meeting of the committee decided to make the government staff work for two additional years. The committee says the retirement age will go up by 6 months each year for the next four years.
Earlier, the Public Service Commission had recommended that the retirement age be upgraded to 60 years. The commission had given four main reasons for recommending so. The reasons were an increase in the life expectancy of Nepalis, likely reduction in the pension burden, letting women complete the full 20-year service term even if they enter the service at 40 (the highest age point to enter the civil service) and uniformity among SAARC countries.
