Kathmandu, September 9
As many as 20 House of Representatives members representing Kathmandu district to the legislature have demanded that the House form a separate committee of lawmakers that would discuss issues related to the Covid-19 crisis.
The lawmakers on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Deputy Prime Minister Ishwar Pokharel, who leads the government’s Coronavirus Control Special Committee, demanding initiatives to form such a committee.
Forming a parliamentary committee, however, falls under the Federal Parliament’s jurisdiction. But, sources in the secretariat of Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota say the lawmakers have not approached him with the demand yet.
Those demanding for such a committee include the senior leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party, Madhav Kumar Nepal, and the party’s lawmakers Shashi Shrestha, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Krishna Bahadur Rai, Binda Pandey, Ram Kumari Jhankri, Sarita Neupane, Bina Shrestha, Anjana Bishankhe, Maya Devi Neupane, Mukunda Neupane, and Sujita Shakya.
Likewise, the main opposition Nepali Congress party’s Prakash Man Singh, Gagan Thapa, Bhimsen Das Pradhan, Divya Mani Rajbhandari, and Rajan KC, and People’s Socialist Party’s Rajendra Kumar Shrestha and Renuka Gurung have signed the memorandum.
