Kathmandu, June 17
Rubbish has piled up in the Kathmandu valley once again as the Sisdol landfill site in Okharpauwa of Nuwakot is full with waste.
Kathmandu metropolitan city’s Environment Department Head Hari Kumar Shrestha says the city government has been unable to transport waste for the past two days thanks to the lack of space there.
Kathmandu’s waste management gets roadblocks every few months due to different factors. The landfill site becoming full is also a recurring one as the site was selected in 2006 just for three years. But, 15 years on, the government has not been able to prepare an alternative.
In the past years, local governments in Kathmandu used to manage disposing waste there itself making the ground smooth. Now also, the same is being done, according to Shrestha.
Nonetheless, Shrestha states the federal government should prepare the new landfill site in Bancharedanda on the Dhading-Nuwakot border as soon as possible. The construction work there is going on at a snail’s pace.
