Kathmandu, August 11
The government has finally appointed the popular Kul Man Ghising as the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority.
Incumbent Hitendra Dev Shakya has been sent to the Water and Energy Commission as its secretary for a four-year term as the secretary-equivalent official.
A cabinet meeting held on Monday made the decision, an official in the Ministry of Energy says, adding the Office of the Prime Minister informed the ministry of the decision on Tuesday.
The ministry is preparing to offer the appointment letter to Ghising today.
Ghising, who served the government-run power distribution monopoly for four years, had retired in September 2020 as the KP Sharma Oli-led government did not reappoint him despite a wide demand. He is credited for ending the hours-long daily power outage in the country.
With the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government preparing to bring the celebrated face back, incumbent Shakya had demanded a respectful role. Accordingly, the government transferred him to the commission by creating a new special-class position.
