Kathmandu, November 19
Issuing a notice on November 8, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport said five of seven provincial transport offices would make embossed number plates mandatory for all the new vehicles coming for registration to be effective from November 17.
However, provincial offices have told the ministry that the decision is impossible to get implemented anytime soon.
The federal government had urged transport offices in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces to begin compulsorily issuing embossed number plates to new vehicles. However, the offices continued issuing traditional number plates on Wednesday and Thursday also.
Netra Prasad Bhattarai, the chief of the Vehicle Office in Ekantakuna, Lalitpur of the Bagmati province, says making the embossed number plates mandatory has been impossible for now due to a lack of infrastructures and human resources.
He also blames the federal government did not take efforts to coordinate with provincial counterparts on time to implement the decision.
