Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. This announcement follows Yunus’s declaration on Tuesday of his readiness to lead the interim administration.
International media reported that a meeting at the presidential palace on Tuesday selected the Nobel laureate Yunus as the interim government’s head. The meeting included representatives of student leaders who led the reservation movement and the army chief.
Muhammad Yunus, renowned for his fight against poverty, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Known for founding the “bank for the poor,” Yunus was proposed by protesting students to head the interim government.
Yunus is a vocal critic of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has accused him of exploiting the poor. Following news that Yunus was preparing to form his own party, Sheikh Hasina adopted an aggressive stance against him.
In January, Yunus was sentenced to six months in jail for violating labour laws, although he did not serve time in prison.
The 84-year-old Yunus is currently in France for medical treatment but has announced his intention to return to Bangladesh soon.
