Flood waters continue to wreak havoc in Liping and Gati areas of Sindhupalchowk district in Nepal, three days after the Bhotekoshi inundated the settlements.
Images from the area showed houses collapse and stretches of the Kodari highway washed away by the raging river. Local reports quoting police say there have been no human casualty so far.
According to reports, flash flood took place due to outburst of a ‘landslide dam’ on the Chinese side. According to Engineering Ranjan Kumar Dahal, who has been in touch with scientists on the Chinese side, a landslide occurred at around 8.45 pm NST on Monday at around the 707 Bridge near the China-Nepal Border. The landslide dammed the Poiqu, and when the dam was breached, the river was flooded, he said on his Facebook post.
However, some experts have said there could have been a glacial lake outburst in China, which flooded the river.
State news agency RSS reported that the houses at Liping Bazaar nearby the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge are at high risk of flood while 25 houses and huts from Tatopani to Barhabise have been already swept away.
Similarly, the flood has devastated Tatopani-based Mansarobar Boarding School and swept away the canteen of Tatopani Customs Office and two trippers parked there.
The flood has also eroded several portions of the around 21-km road stretch along the Araniko Highway disrupting people’s movement, said Police Inspector at Area Police Office Barhabise Raju Pandey.
