The CPN-UML is busy in discussions for the selection of a candiate for the prime ministerial race in which CPN-Maoist Centre Chair Prachanda, with tacit backing from the Nepali Congress, is the frontrunner.
A UML standing committee meeting is pondering over the candidate, on Tuesday.
The meeting taking place at Prime Minister’s Official Residence in Baluwatar is dwelling on the selection of the candidate for PM and other issues, secreary at the UML party office, Krishna Gopal Shrestha, informed.
UML Vice-president Bam Dev Gautam and deputy leader of the UML parliamentary party, Subas Nembang, have emerged as likely candidates. The meeting is discussing the two names, a source said.
Some leaders said there’s no need to field any candidate against Prachanda, pointing that voting against the latter will automatically make the UML the main opposition.

The candidate fielded in this race for PM will automatically become an alternative candidate for PM. The source said leaders like Madhav Nepal and Jhala Nath Khanal suggested fielding Gautam as KP Oli is not contesting the race.
