Kathmandu, July 18

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has invited Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-Maoist Centre Chair Prachanda for discussions, amid efforts from the two parties to replace his government through a no-confidence vote in the Parliament.

Prime Minister Oli has invited Deuba and Prachanda for discussions at Baluwatar (PM’s official residence) at 5 pm, Chetan Adhikari, PM Oli’s press coordinator, told Onlinekhabar. PM has invited the two top leaders for discussions on constitutional complexities.

The invite comes a day after PM Oli held discussions with experts on constitutional law. The PM had inquired about the process of forming a new government if the House passes the no-trust motion.

The experts taking part in the discussions had offered three alternatives. They had suggested amending the provision in Article 298 (2) of the Constitution that calls for formation of a government within a week after passage of the no-confidence motion. If that does not happen, the second option is to remove ‘obstacles’ by ending the Parliament session. Offering the third alternative, the experts had said the Parliament will have to pass a proposal on the basis of political understanding.

PM Oli, according to a source, wants to discuss ways to hand over power and facilitate the formation of a new government.
