Nepal sees rising temperatures, Kathmandu hits 24.6°C

Kathmandu, January 23

The temperature across Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley, has started to rise over the past few days. Since the beginning of January, there has been a noticeable increase in temperatures, with recent days feeling significantly warmer.

Meteorologist Sanjiv Adhikari from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Meteorological Forecasting Division, noted that both maximum and minimum temperatures have been higher than usual. Explaining the reasons behind the temperature rise, he said, “There hasn’t been rainfall for an extended period, and a high-pressure system over India is also contributing to the warming effect.” He added that this is the time of year when temperatures typically start climbing.

A high-pressure system generally contributes to temperature increases, while a low-pressure system brings clouds, rain, and cooler conditions. Adhikari stated that the high-pressure system over India is expected to shift in the coming days, which may slow the current rate of temperature rise. However, the general trend of increasing temperatures is likely to continue.

According to the department’s latest report released this evening, Kathmandu’s maximum temperature has reached 24.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature stands at 6.2 degrees Celsius.

Earlier this season, Kathmandu’s temperature had dropped as low as 2 degrees Celsius. Over the past 24 hours, Dipayal recorded the highest maximum temperature at 27.2 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Birendranagar at 27.1 degrees. Out of the 21 temperature monitoring centers across the country, 11 have recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the lowest minimum temperature was recorded in Jumla at minus 3.5 degrees Celsius.
