Kathmandu, March 19
Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Raheel Sharif has confirmed death sentence to a man convicted by the country’s military court in the 2013 murder of a Nepali and nine other foreign mountaineers in Nanga Parbat.
“Today Chief of Army Staff confirmed death sentences awarded to another 13 hardcore terrorists, who were involved in committing heinous offences relating to terrorism, including killing of foreign tourists at Nanga Parbat,” a press release issued by the country’s Inter Services Public Relations said.
The convict, identified as Irfan Ullah, was among the attackers who killed the mountaineers, including Nepal’s Sona Sherpa, in June 2013. According to Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations, Pakistan’s military court had earlier handed him the death sentence.
The statement said the convict was an active member of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan involved in the killing of 10 foreign tourists near the base camp of the world’s ninth tallest mountain peak. “He admitted his offences before the Magistrate and the trial court. He was tried on 3 charges and awarded death sentence,” the ISPR said.
