Nepal’s U-23 team, which defeated hosts India in the final of South Asian Games football, landed in Kathmandu to heroes’ welcome. This was a rare sight for a generation of football fans who had never witnessed a win as big as this (the last time Nepal won any major tournament was 23 years ago!).
Here we look at five photos that will remain the memory of Nepali football fans for a long time (in no particular order.

The Coach
Coach Raju Shakya was a member of the Nepali national team that won SAG football 23 years ago. He was assistant coach in 1999 when Nepal had to settle for silver. Nepali football fans believe that coach Shakya’s luck was one of the reasons Nepal won the tournament.

Goalie Bikesh Kuthu is a strong man on the field. But he also has his soft corner when it comes to family! Imagine being a proud Kuthu.

The Fans
The players, no doubt, play for their country. But they also know that the fans are the ones who look up to them. Without the fans, there would be no joy in winning.

The Khadas and Garlands
It is part of Nepali tradition to welcome people with khadas and garlands.The more the khadas, the more someone is respected!

Bikesh Kuthu is for sure the man of the hour. He sure knows how to entertain the crowd.
