Badal-Prachanda tieup marriage of rightist elements present in leftist forces: CP Gajurel

Kathmandu, May 12

The Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ faction of the CPN-Revolutionary Maoist, has chosen to ‘unite’ with the ruling UCPN-Maoist.

But CP Gajurel, vice-president of the Revolutionary Maoist, says the Badal faction has surrendered to the Prachanda-led party instead of uniting with it. Gajurel said this at a face-to-face that Reporters’ Club had organised on Thursday. He described the coming together of the Badal faction and the Prachanda-led party as the unity of rightist elements in leftist parties.

Gajurel also accused Badal of taking the step in a hurry by sacrificing his ideology to secure berths in the government.

He said: We want unity of truly revolutionary communists. The UCPN-Maoist has been taking an extremely rightist political line for some time, so unity with it has not been possible. We have had informal talks with them on unification. But the possibility of unification ended temporarily as UCPN-Maoist reached a 16-point understanding in the process of constitution making.

Gajurel said unification of his party and the Prachanda-led party will not be possible unless the latter leaves the Parliament and the government. Referring to the Mohan Baidhya-led faction’s split from the UCPN-Maoist and formation of the Revolutionary Maoist party, Gajurel said they took the step because the UCPN-Maoist betrayed the revolution.

About the future course of action, Gajurel announced they will start preparations for a pro-people revolution, adding that his party will not raise arms unless the state bars them from putting their views before the masses. “This is no time to raise arms. We will do so if the government suppresses our movement and prevents us from going to the people.”

The state is trying to derail the peace process by reviving conflict-era cases, he charged, adding that the country will land in another conflict if it does not go for reconciliation vis-a-vis conflict-era cases. We are ready to work together with different parties based on common agendas, he said, adding that there can be functional unity not only with Maoist parties but also with the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML on the basis of agendas.
