NSU election process in rough weather as rival camp alleges unilateral changes in poll plan

Kathmandu, August 15

The process for electing the leadership of Nepal Student Union, a Nepali Congress-aligned organisation, seems to be in rough weather with a dispute arising in the committee tasked with holding the election. This comes at a time when the Ram Chandra Poudel camp within the NC has been protesting against the inclusion of what it calls ‘fake general convention representatives’ in the NSU election process.

Committee members have threatened to boycott the election process if committee coordinator Bharat Pokharel does not mend ways and continues to go it alone. The committee formed under Pokharel has Megh Raj Pokharel, Arun Panjiyar, Krishna Prasad Paneru and Tej Rawal as members.

Paneru and Megh Raj acccused committee coordinator Pokharel of changing election schedule repeatedly on his own against the committee’s decision.

Paneru told Onlinekhabar: ‘The coordinator has made the election schedule public after amending it unilaterally, instead of discussing the matter with us. We are objecting to the unilateral move.’

The election committee should be independent, but coordinator Pokharel is acting as per the directives of a certain leader, Paneru said. Committee members Paneru and Megh Raj have demanded that the party put the election process on hold till the resolution of disputes.

Paneru told Onlinekhabar: Repeated changes in the election schedule are not giving a good message. Keeping this in mind, we have said the poll schedule should be publicised only after removing the irritants.

On his part, coordinator Pokharel said: The party has assigned me the task of conducting the NSU election and I am working to complete the same.
