Dhangadhi, October 5
Minister for Health Gagan Kumar Thapa on Wednesday called Members of Parliament to save the life of Professor Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging a hunger strike demanding reforms in Nepal’s medical sector, including impeachment of Lok Man Singh Karki, chief commissioner, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, for his alleged role in irregularities pertaining to the sector.
Talking to journalists at Dhangadhi, Minister Thapa said he had requested Dr KC not to stage a hunger strike pledging to disallow hankypanky at the Ministry of Health. He said Dr KC’s strike may end if the dispute over the appointment of Tribhuvan University’s dean ends.
Government cannot table an impeachment motion (in the Parliament) against the chief of a constitutional body even if it wants to
Thapa said government cannot file an impeachment motion against the chief of a constitutional body even if it wants to.
As a lawmaker, I support demands Dr KC has raised, Thapa said. “In the capacity of lawmaker, I had said that Parliament should initiate discussion on the issue (of impeachment). But today I am in a different capacity,” Minister Thapa said.
