Kathmandu, October 19
The Parliament’s Women, Children and Social Welfare Committee on Wednesday formed a sub-committee to investigate irregularities in Nepal’s medical sector.
Wednesday’s meeting of the committee formed a nine-member sub-committee to look into irregularities related to entrance exams and fees, among others.
Committee Chair Ranju Jha said the sub-committee will study irregularities related to collection of fees, entrance exams and alleged CIAA intervention in Kathmandu University-conducted medical entrance exams.
The committee has given the sub-committee 15 days to submit its report on the irregularities.
Before forming the sub-committee, the committee had held acquired information from Minister for Health Gagan Thapa about problems persisting in Nepal’s medical sector and government efforts aimed at solving them.
Health Minister Thapa told the committee they were working to reform the sector on the basis of the report that the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led taskforce had submitted to then government.
He identified failure to increase seats (for various academic programmes) and introduce new academic programmes as the main problem facing the medical sector.
Thapa said he has directed Nepal Medical Council to conduct its activities in a way that does not affect the current academic session, pending new arrangements.
