Kathmandu, October 21

On Friday, the venue of the closed session of the ‘International Mega Hindu conference (Birat Hindu Sammelan) turned into a battleground of sorts as royalists of different hues and colours chose to settle their differences using brawn instead of brain.

This came a day after the former King Gyanendra Shah, addressing the international conference, said that politics of negation will cause marginalisation, which will give rise to revolt.

In the clashes at Kamaladi-based Nepal Academy, an RPP-Nepal activist suffered injuries. Tension has gripped the venue and a significant number of police personnel have mobilised to bring the situation under control.

It all started when an individual declared that he too is a monarchist and a cadre of Kamal Thapa (RPP Nepal chief). This fuelled a dispute that triggered clashes between supporters, according to an eyewitness.

An infuriated group shouted slogans against Aditya Nath, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, who was attending the conference as a guest.

The former king had inaugurated the conference at Bankali, Kathmandu, on Thursday. Monarchists had tried to cash in on rising frustration against political parties by bringing the former king to the fore. But their effort seems to have failed already.

It was informed earlier that the conference, which will conclude on Saturday, will declare Gyanendra Shah as the ‘Hindu emperor’ and Nepal a Hindu state
