Kathmandu, March 9
Nepal’s main opposition party the Nepali Congress will not field a candidate in the election for Speaker of House of Representatives.
Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma says the Nepali Congress will abstain from naming a candidate. This means that the Left Alliance’s candidate Krishna Bahadur Mahara will be elected unopposed added Sharma.
Earlier today, CPN (Maoist Centre) leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara filed his candidacy for the post. His candidacy has been proposed by CPN (UML) leader and former Speaker Subas Chandra Nembang, and seconded by the Maoist Centre leader Dev Gurung.
The Nepali Congress had fielded Laxmi Rai as its candidate for President even if her victory is next to impossible to send a message that it is opposed to the idea of Bhandari as President. However, in the case of Speaker, the Nepali Congress seems to be content with Mahara.
