House panels giving govt a hard time, PM complains to Speaker

Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara greets as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli arrives home concluding a weeklong Europe trip, in Kathmandu on Sunday, June 16, 2019.

Kathmandu, September 16

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has complained that various committees in the Federal Parliament are giving the government a hard time. Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara revealed the complaint speaking at an event in Kathmandu on Monday.

“The prime minister has been telling me that the committees are creating a lot of difficulties. I suggested that he sit with the committee chairs one day and discuss the issues,” Mahara narrated, “But, he said he would not participate in a meeting. He said I should do it.”

Considering his party chair’s complaint, Mahara said, “What I meant here is we have to monitor the government, but should not control it. We should keep watching if the government is on the right track.”

The House of Representatives chief directed chairs and members of various panels, however, to continue monitoring the government activities. “It’s natural for a government to deviate from its track. Our responsibility is to give advices about being on the track. But we should not control the government.”

In another context, he said the House scheduled a monthly question-answer session with the prime minister, but the executive chief could not attend them citing health reasons.
