Kathmandu, January 17
The Supreme Court has ordered its Chief Registrar to register a writ petition being filed demanding that the government declare Prithvi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, as a public holiday.
A single bench of Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal issued the order on Wednesday after senior advocate Surendra Bhandari moved the court against the registrar after his petition was rejected.
The justice in his order states that the contribution of Shah to Nepal’s formation is remarkable, and the day was being celebrated as a public holiday in the past; hence it deserves a judicial consideration.
Probably, this is the first time that the apex court has expressed its opinion about the late king of Nepal’s contribution to history.
