Govt-run DDC found to have sold ‘expired’ and ‘inedible’ 194,975 kg butter to the public

Butter past its expiry date found in a production plant of Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) in Kathmandu on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

Kathmandu, August 2

The government-run Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) has been found to have sold 194,975 kg butter to the public even though the milk product was proved to be past the expiry date, hence inedible.

In October last year, market monitors from the Kathmandu metropolitan city had found the expired butter at the DDC plant in Balaju of Kathmandu. The monitors had then tested the product at a lab of the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control to find it below the quality standard and hence told the DDC not to use that anymore.

Nearly 10 months after that, it has been found that the government-owned corporation already sold it to the public. “It has not been a long time since I was appointed the chief here. When I came, there was not any old butter,” informs the plant’s chief Govinda Gautam.

Another DDC official confirms the butter whose quality standard was questioned has already been sold.

Meanwhile, the Food Technology Department’s Director-General Upendra Raya says his office has filed a writ petition against the DDC in connection with the sale of the substandard butter.
