The recent announcement of the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) results by the National Examination Board (NEB) has elicited a mixture of emotions among students in Nepal. This highly anticipated milestone is often referred the iron gate, which signifies the transition into a new phase of life for these young individuals.
It is a period filled with dilemmas and confusion, particularly when it comes to selecting the most suitable academic path. The choices range from A levels and +2 Science to Management, Arts, and other disciplines. Amid the uncertainty, students should maintain composure and base their decisions on personal interests and long-term goals rather than what others want from them.
Statistical data do not dictate future
The NEB has released statistical data regarding the distribution of Grade Point Average (GPA) among the students. The results indicate that 22,475 students have achieved a GPA ranging from 3.60 to 4.00, while 55,069 students have attained a GPA between 3.20 and 3.60.
Additionally, the board reports that 72,362 students fall within the GPA range of 2.80 to 3.20, followed by 89,331 students within the 2.40 to 2.80 range, and 102,293 students within the 2.00 to 2.40 range. Although these numbers reflect the academic performance of the students, it is essential to remember that grades alone should not dictate their future choices.
As a student who has personally undergone this transformative experience, I wish to emphasise the immense significance of pursuing subjects that genuinely captivate one’s interest. Regardless of one’s GPA, it is crucial to choose a field of study that resonates with personal passion and potential.
Relying solely on high grades as the determining factor can lead to dissatisfaction and a lack of motivation in the long run. Similarly, opting for subjects based solely on their perceived ease due to lower scores is an imprudent approach.
Every subject presents its own set of challenges and necessitates unwavering dedication and hard work. In my own educational journey, despite attaining excellent grades, I made the conscious decision to pursue my deep-rooted interests in journalism and English literature by enrolling in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) programme.
This choice resulted from meticulous consideration and extensive discussions with my parents. Thus, I strongly encourage students to engage in open and candid conversations with their parents or guardians, as they can provide invaluable guidance and unwavering support during this critical decision-making process.
What next
It is crucial to acknowledge that SEE results do not define the entirety of a student’s future. Numerous individuals have achieved remarkable success, regardless of their performance in this examination. Life presents countless opportunities for growth and improvement beyond the boundaries of these grades.
Therefore, students should not be disheartened by the results, but rather look forward to the vast array of possibilities that lie ahead. When selecting a subject to pursue, several factors must be taken into account, including personal interests, financial considerations, and individual potential.
It is imperative to assess one’s strengths and weaknesses and carefully consider the long-term career prospects associated with each subject. Furthermore, students should conduct thorough research and gather information about the various courses, universities, and job opportunities related to their preferred fields of study. This will enable them to make well-informed decisions that align harmoniously with their aspirations.
The SEE results undoubtedly represent a pivotal moment in a student’s life. However, it is crucial to remember that these results should not serve as the sole determining factor when choosing an academic path. Students should prioritise their interests, consider their capabilities, and seek guidance from their parents or guardians during this crucial decision-making process.
