Mugu, February 9

The government has decided to deploy tourist police in Rara to enhance the safety of domestic and international visitors.

The Department of Tourism and Chhayanath Rara Municipality signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to station tourist police in Nepal’s largest and deepest lake area. The agreement was signed on Friday by Liladhar Awasthi, Director of the Department of Tourism, and Pashupati Shahi, Chief Administrative Officer of the municipality.

Under the MoU, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, along with the Department of Tourism, will oversee staffing, police posts, and deployment. Meanwhile, Chhayanath Rara Municipality will provide necessary infrastructure, including housing, drinking water, and electricity, to facilitate operations.

Rara is not only known for its pristine lake but also for religious sites, mountains, and caves. Many tourists hesitate to explore these areas alone due to safety concerns. Officials believe that the presence of tourist police will encourage visitors to explore more freely and extend their stay.

“The local economy will benefit as tourist stays increase,” said Acting Chief Administrative Officer Shahi. Mayor Bishnu Kumar Bham added that efforts are underway to arrange barracks, water, electricity, and other essential facilities for the tourist police.
