Call to declare Dhulikhel a ‘Crisis-Hit Zone’ after flood and landslide damages

Dhulikhel-11

Kavrepalanchowk, October 28

Dhulikhel Municipality has urged the government to declare it a ‘crisis-hit zone’ following severe floods and landslides, causing losses estimated at Rs 1 billion.

A delegation led by Dhulikhel Mayor Ashok Byanju met with Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Man Singh and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, submitting a memorandum to highlight the critical damage in Dhulikhel and request government support for recovery efforts. Mid-October declarations designated 11 of 13 local governments in Kavrepalanchowk as crisis-hit areas, excluding Dhulikhel and Banepa.

Mayor Byanju emphasised the urgent need for rebuilding critical infrastructure, including wastewater treatment centres in Thakurigaun, Vandol, and Itol, and restoring drinking water systems, roads, schools, and other vital structures. Preliminary data shows 64 houses fully damaged and 572 partially affected in the municipality.

Dhulikhel has also reached out to the German government to help reconstruct the Dhulikhel Drinking Water Project, operational for nearly 30 years. During a meeting with German Ambassador Dr. Thomas Prinz, Mayor Byanju shared that Rs 35.1 million would be needed for the project, and the ambassador pledged support for its reconstruction.
