Kathmandu shooting sparks outrage as Sabin’s family demands justice

A tragic police shooting in Teen Kune has left a family in mourning and raised serious concerns about public safety. Sabin Maharjan, a 29-year-old sumo driver from Kirtipur, was shot dead on March 28 during a pro-monarchy protest, leaving behind his elderly parents, wife, and an eight-year-old daughter.

Sabin had left home that morning to repair his vehicle but never returned. By the afternoon, his family received devastating news—he had been fatally shot during clashes between police and demonstrators. How he ended up at the protest site remains unclear, but a bullet struck his neck, killing him instantly.

His family refuses to claim his body, demanding martyr status and government compensation before performing his final rites. “Sabin was our only provider. Now, who will take care of his wife and daughter?” his grieving uncle, Kiran Maharjan, questioned.

A viral video allegedly shows police firing at retreating civilians, intensifying public outrage. However, authorities deny shooting anyone from behind, stating an internal investigation is underway. Meanwhile, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has accused the government of excessive force and demanded justice for the victims.
