Kathmandu, September 14
Daayitwa organised a ‘Governance Symposium 2016’ on Wednesday, welcoming over 60 distinguished guests representing the public, private and civil society sectors, as well as the international community.
According to the organisers, this was a forum for the 2016 Daayitwa Summer Fellows to present their research findings and for public policy stakeholders from the government, the civil society and the international community to discuss ways to increase participation of Nepali youth in the policy making process.
Nabindra Raj Joshi, Minister, Ministry of Industry was the Chief Guest at the event, and Dr. Chiranjibi Nepal, Governor, Nepal Rastra Bank was Special Guest.
Daayitwa’s Summer Fellowship programme included 12 young Nepali policy innovators trained in eight countries who worked with six ministries, and two public agencies on hi-priority public projects.
The Endowment Fund, Ma Movement, Himalayan Bank, Mercantile, and Buddha Air will be funding 15 fellows in the next five years.
The symposium also featured two panels on ‘Financial Innovation and Promoting Agri-entrepreneurship’ and ‘Strengthening Local Governance for Enterprise-led Economic Growth.’
The event also had leadership keynotes from Bhojraj Pokharel, former Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commission of Nepal on the idea of ‘Collaboration’, Dr Swarnim Wagle, Member, National Planning Commission, on ‘Innovation’, and Rita Thapa, founder, Tewa, on ‘Service’.
The closing remarks were delivered by Leela Mani Paudyal, former Chief Secretary, Government of Nepal. He stressed the difficulties related to bringing change, and emphasised that “there is no quick fix.”
During the course to bring change, we would have to encounter many gray areas which would require innovative thinking, he said.
