Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said on Sunday that new understanding reached with India during his four-day visit to the southern neighbour will not affect Nepal’s relations with its northern neighbour China.

Talking to journalists at Tribhuvan International Airport upon his return from India, Prachanda reiterated his claim that the visit has ‘further strengthened’ Nepal’s ties with India.

Nepal PM Prachanda categorically said that the 25-point joint communiqué that he and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi issued during the visit will not affect Nepal’s relations with China.

On mutually-agreed topics, we have reached an understanding to move ahead together in international fora, Prachanda said, claiming that this was nothing new.

Since 2004, Nepal has been supporting India in its bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Prachanda said. Asked whether the recent understanding will not affect Nepal’s relations with China, the PM said: Our ties with India have their own dimensions and we have adopted a balanced policy. This will not affect our ties with China.
