This weekend, the United States President Joe Biden invited 40 leaders from across the world to attend a Leaders Summit on Climate scheduled for April 22-23.
Whereas three leaders of South Asia–Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (Bangladesh), Prime Minister Lotay Tshering (Bhutan), Prime Minister Narendra Modi (India)–and President Xi Jinping (China) have made it to the list, Nepal has not been invited.
Onlinekhabar has talked to Anna Richey-Allen, the spokesperson of the US Embassy in Kathmandu about the issue.
In response, she said only ‘major economies’ were invited to the summit.
Richey-Allen said, “The summit is only one of several major climate-related events in the run-up to COP-26, which will be a global event. Its primary objective is to encourage the world’s major economies to enhance ambition to keep the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach. ”
The official maintained, “We stand ready to partner with Nepal on climate issues, including our attendance at the Sagarmatha Sambaad when it is organised.”
Meanwhile, the official claimed the United States would announce an ambitious new climate target during the summit, calling on other countries not invited to the summit also to issue their public statements “in support of the summit’s objective of enhancing global ambition on climate change are welcome.
