Workshop held exploring bamboo and wood for forest restoration in Nepal

Kathmandu, November 10

A two-day national workshop and field visit under the LoCoFoRest (Locally Controlled Forest Restoration) program concluded in Patan, Lalitpur, aiming to promote bamboo and wood used in Nepal’s forest restoration efforts. Organised by Nepali representatives from LoCoFoRest Course Round 4 (CR4), the event focused on sustainable forest practices, community empowerment, and biodiversity conservation.

According to a press statement, participants, including Swedish forest experts, local leaders, and environmentalists, discussed the use of bamboo and wood as primary materials for forest restoration. Field visits included traditional wooden structures in Patan Durbar Square and moso bamboo in Banepa, offering insights into local applications of these resources.

The workshop emphasised combining forest restoration with economic benefits for local communities. LoCoFoRest representative Sujan Khanal noted that bamboo and wood offer opportunities for long-term community and environmental gains. “This workshop has strengthened our approach to forest and water conservation in Nepal,” Khanal stated.

LoCoFoRest, funded by the Swedish government, promotes sustainable forest management across nine countries, supporting projects that enhance ecosystem services and economic opportunities. The event, part of a broader five-year initiative, highlighted strategies for Nepal to advance forest landscape restoration and local economic empowerment through resource-based solutions.
