Pioneer Moto Corp Pvt. Ltd., the official and sole distributor of Nissan, has unveiled an innovative and interesting SUV, the Nissan X-Trail e-Power in Nepal. Nissan has incorporated intriguing technology into its 7-seater SUV, earning good reviews in both the European and Australian markets.
The car is electric but not fully. The X-Trail uses an e-Power system which is a series hybrid system that involves using a petrol engine to produce electricity, which then powers an electric motor that moves the vehicle. This setup enhances efficiency by separating the engine from directly driving the wheels. Nissan debuted its e-Power technology in 2016 with the Nissan Note e-Power in Japan.
Nissan has become a popular option in the compact SUV segment with the Nissan Magnite in the budget option. The Nissan Leaf, an electric hatchback, is also doing quite well. Nissan aims the same for the X-Trail e-Power.

Design
Exterior
The Nissan X-Trail e-Power represents the fourth generation of the X-Trail series, featuring a modern design enhanced with aerodynamic features. The vehicle now boasts a more muscular and robust appearance, incorporating a front design reminiscent of the third generation but with a contemporary twist. The signature V-Motion grille seamlessly connects the LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) and indicators, contributing to its updated and stylish aesthetic. The LED headlights are situated below the DRLS which have a nice throw of light. The presence of chrome accents also makes the front look more premium.
On the side, the chrome accents continue, enhancing the muscular, bulkier appearance that’s more noticeable with the 220mm ground clearance. The 19-inch alloy wheels further add to the premium looks. The doors open almost to a right angle which makes it easier to enter and exit the car.
The rear of the X-Trail e-Power further continues the chrome accents to the rear spoiler. The LED taillights and indicators are bright. The tailgate is wide and large which opens to the boot.
Interior
The Nissan X-Trail e-Power has a luxurious interior with modern vibes. The front dash and the door have soft-touch materials which also help in reducing road noise. The front dash includes the steering wheel, digital instrument cluster, infotainment system, climate control and glove box.
The steering wheel is also wrapped in soft-touch material. It has necessary buttons and controls for audio including volume controls and track selection, cruise control buttons, and phone controls including answer and reject and buttons to navigate through the digital instrument panel menus and information displays.
The digital instrument cluster is 13-inch in size and displays speed, rpm, battery level, fuel, mileage, energy consumption, trip meter, sensors, trip meter, driver assistance features, media information, time and warning lights. The display also shows the energy flow meter which shows real-time feed of the battery and engine.
Coming to the centre, the Nissan X-Trail e-Power has an 8-inch floating infotainment system. The infotainment system’s size could be better with other markets getting a larger 13-inch system. The system is smooth with support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
It displays navigation, audio, climate, phone, vehicle settings, 360° camera, rear camera, trip info, and personalization. Just below the infotainment system, there is the climate control. The Nissan X-Trail e-Power has physical buttons and knobs to control and adjust the temperature and airflow.
The centre console of the Nissan X-Trail e-Power includes the gear knob which helps change the different modes such as park, drive, neutral, reverse and other modes such as snow, sports, B mode and Auto hold. The SUV has a USB Type-C and Type-A ports and a 12V socket for power output. It however does not have a wireless charger which is available in other markets. There are also two cup holders and a storage compartment.
The front seats of the Nissan X-Trail e-Power are comfortable with soft materials and comfortable positioning. Both the front seats can be electrically adjusted and are also heated. The front door on the right side includes the power window buttons while both the front door bins are spacious. There is also a panoramic sunroof which can open to view the sky and get air.
The rear second-row seats are comfortable and can accommodate three people. The centre seat can also function as an armrest and has a cup holder. There is a separate AC control panel for the rear, placed in front of the middle seat. The second row is also equipped with sun shades, which come in handy on sunny days. These seats are manually adjustable and offer good legroom. However, the third-row seats are relatively small, making them uncomfortable for adults, although they are suitable for children.
The boot space is nice with 575 litres available with the third seats folded down. It can be further increased by folding the second-row seats.
Performance
The Nissan X-Trail e-Power has a 1.5-litre petrol engine with e-Power. The engine however is not connected to the wheels. Wait! then how does the SUV even run? It is quite tricky. It uses a unique hybrid system that consists of the engine, power generator, inverter, and electric motor. The main power source is the electric motor which drives the wheels directly. The petrol engine only serves as a generator to charge the battery pack.
In the other regular hybrids, the petrol engine directly drives the wheels when needed but the case in the X-Trail is different. The engine is not connected to the wheels at all. The engine starts the generator, providing electrical power to either recharge the battery or directly propel the electric motor. The battery pack serves as a storage unit for electricity generated by the generator and also captures energy during regenerative braking. Subsequently, this stored energy is used to power the electric motor responsible for driving the wheels.
The Nissan e-Power system does not use a direct connection between the engine and wheels. Instead, it lets the petrol engine run at its best, saving more fuel than regular hybrid systems. This system makes driving quieter and smoother with steady speed-ups because it’s mainly powered by an electric motor. Plus, it avoids worries about running out of power by charging the battery while driving using a built-in generator.
The 1.5L engine in the X-Trail has a capacity of 1,498 cc, delivering 106 kW of power at 4,400 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 2,400 rpm. This engine charges the 2.1kWh Li-Ion battery, which then supplies power to the motors. The e-Power motor reaches a maximum power of 157 kW and a maximum torque of 330 Nm in the front electric motor, while the rear electric motor generates 195 Nm of torque. It uses CVT transmission and e-4orce 4WD drive type.
The X-Trail e-Power has a 55-litre fuel tank. The fuel consumption is 6.4 to 6.5 litres per 100km. It has a top speed of around 187-190km/h.
The Nissan X-Trail e-Power comes with disc brakes both at the front and rear and is equipped with ABS, which helps prevent skidding when braking hard. The car rides on 235/55 R19 tyres. The 19-inch alloy wheels add to the performance and the styling too. For its suspension, the X-Trail uses independent suspension in the front and independent multi-link suspension in the rear.
Safety and Features
Safety is not compromised either in the Nissan X-Trail e-Power with several features. It has got a rear-view camera, making reversing easier, along with around-view monitoring to keep an eye on all sides. Parking sensors at the front and back help avoid bumps while parking. The car also includes VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) and HAS (Hill Start Assist) to manage stability on different terrains and prevent rolling back on hills.
With six airbags, including curtain and side airbags for the driver and passenger, it prioritises passenger safety in case of a collision. Auto speed control adds another layer of safety by helping maintain a steady speed, while a system alerts pedestrians of the vehicle’s presence for added precaution.
