Thapathali-Prasuti-Griha
Kathmandu, April 25

The demolition of Thapathali Maternity Hospital, damaged in the Gorkha earthquake of April 25, 2015, has entered its last phase. International Office of Migrations is helping pull down the hospital’s old building. Japan International Cooperation Agency plans to construct a modern, three-storey hospital building on the site where the hospital stands now.

Dr Jageshwor Gautam, the hospital’s director, said the demolition of the hospital building has entered the last stage.

The hospital that had 415 beds has 260 beds after its partial demolition.

With parts of the hospital damaged in the quake, the hospital administration had shifted its birthing centre, blood bank, emergency lab, safe abortion service, post-op ward, general ward, cabins and pre-maternity ward and neonatal intensive care unit to the academic block and other buildings. As per an agreement, the building construction work will begin in Asar (about two months from now), Gautam said, adding that construction work will complete in 15 months.

The new building will comprise emergency ward, labour room, birthing centre, operation theatre, emergency operation theatre, post-op ward, blood bank, emergency lab, NICU, the academic section and the faculty. JICA has also pledged modern equipment for the hospital. The construction project is estimated to cost around Rs 1.5 billion.
