Kathmandu, November 28
The silent period for the upcoming local-level by-elections, scheduled for December 1, will commence at midnight tonight, according to the Election Commission (EC).
As per election regulations, the silent period starts 48 hours before voting. During this time, candidates and individuals are prohibited from campaigning or soliciting votes through physical means or social media platforms.
The EC has implemented the silent period to ensure free and fair elections, stating that it will closely monitor compliance during this period.
Voting will take place in 33 districts for 44 positions, including two District Coordination Committee chiefs, one mayor, one deputy mayor, two rural municipality chiefs, four deputy chiefs, and 34 ward chairpersons.
A total of 162 polling stations and 293 polling centres have been set up for the election, with 226,799 registered voters. Among them, 114,900 are male, 111,896 are female, and three identify as others.
Out of the 44 positions, three have unopposed candidates, leaving 41 positions to be contested. Nepali Congress candidates Tek Raj Bhattarai and Tikakumari Chaudhary (Bhul) have already been elected unopposed as District Coordination Committee chiefs in Okhaldhunga and Kailali, respectively. Similarly, Jagat Gharti of the Maoist Center has been elected unopposed as the ward chairperson of Putha Uttarganga Rural Municipality-2 in Eastern Rukum.
