Two leaders of the main opposition Nepali Congress said at a programme on Sunday that the party should seek an alternative to the KP Oli government as it has failed to implement the newly-promulgated constitution.

NC leaders Bimalendra Nidhi and Shekhar Koirala said a new government is a must for addressing demands of Madheshi parties and implementing the constitution effectively.

The two leaders were speaking at the inaugural of Nepal Trade Union Congress’ national conference, coinciding with May Day. Because of indifference on the part of the ruling CPN-UML, of which Oli is the chairman, there has been no agreement with Madheshi parties on redrawing of provincial boundaries, they said. Nidhi maintained: The CPN-UML-led government is the main obstacle in the implementation of the constitution and resolution of issues related to provincial boundaries, among others.

The two described PM Oli as someone, who is against federalism and argued that one cannot expect a PM opposed to federalism to implement a federal constitution. “This government is indifferent towards implementation of the constitution. It does not want concerns of Madhesh and indigenous nationalities addressed.”

They also accused Oli of politicising the judiciary and showing traits of a dictator while making decisions. This government is a complete failure when it comes to rebuilding quake-ravaged infrastructure, controlling black marketing and making the administration more efficient, they maintained.

The Parliament session is starting in two days, they noted, adding that the NC should seek an alternative to this government. However, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba did not utter a word against the government. Deuba called for the formation of a labour commission to address problems facing workers.
