Kathmandu, May 25
The United Nations will continue assistance to Nepal for the reconstruction of physical infrastructure damaged in last year’s quakes, Ban Ki-Moon, secretary general of the world body, said.
Ban said this while addressing the world humanitarian summit in Istanbul, noting that the UN had also helped with rescue and rehabilitation of victims in the aftermath of the quakes.
On the occasion, a team comprising Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa and National Reconstruction Authority’s CEO Sushil Gyawali had presented to Ban a five-year reconstruction and rehabilitation plan. Secretary General Ban shared his happiness with the Nepali team after it presented a comprehensive reconstruction and rehabilitation plan, CEO Gyawali said.
The Nepali team stressed the need to deliver assistance collected internationally for Nepal’s quake victims at the earliest.
CEO Gyawali has returned home after completing his four-day visit to Turkey.
Meanwhile, the government-initiated Reconstruction Mega-campaign has been moving on at a sluggish pace. It has become pretty clear at this stage that most of the earthquake victims will have to spend the rainy season in tents as building shelters for them will take time.
