The Nepali Congress, the main opposition and the biggest party in the Parliament, has promised to help the CPN-Maoist Centre form a new government by toppling the KP Sharma Oli-led ruling coalition. The Congress has rejected the proposal on forming a national unity government under Prachanda, but it is in favour of constituting a majority government under him.

NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba had, on Monday, rejected Prachanda’s proposal on forming a rainbow coalition under his leadership. Congress leaders now say they will support Prachanda if he seeks to topple the CPN-UML-led coalition.

Min Bishwokarma, who is considered close to Deuba, said: We are ready to support Prachanda on the formation of a majority government. The Congress says the Oli government has failed to implement the constitution and address Madhesh issues, among others.

Bishwokarma said they have had to seek an alternative as the incumbent government was making delays on these fronts. Despite Congress’ promise, Prachanda is yet to make a final call on the matter.

A majority of Maoist leaders are said to be in favour of quitting the Oli government, though leaders like Narayan Kaji Shrestha are against the same. Prachanda remains undecided. About two months ago, the Congress had backed what appeared to be the Centre’s feeble attempt to topple the Oli government.
