Kathmandu, April 30
Nepal Himalayas this week witnessed the first death of this climbing season as an Italian climber succumbed to strong winds on his way to 8,617-metre high Mount Dhaulagiri in western Nepal.
Simone La Terra (37) was a member of the 15-person team that was on the mission to conquer the seventh highest peak of the world, according to Dambar Parajuli, Chairperson of Expedition Operators Association. Parajuli’s Prestige Adventure had sent Terra’s expedition.
He was missing from Friday afternoon and his body was retrieved from a gorge on Saturday, according to him.
Efforts had been made to bring his body to Kathmandu for autopsy since Saturday, but helicopter could not reach the site owing to bad weather conditions, Parajuli claims.
The body has been taken to Kathmandu today.
The deceased climber had climbed five 8000-metre peaks so far.
The Department of Tourism says two teams have left for Mount Dhaulagiri for this season. The climbing season on Nepal mountains generally starts in the last week of May and lasts till the onset of monsoon.
