Kathmandu, January 10
A total of 100 suspension bridges are being constructed by the end of this fiscal year (mid-July), the Suspension Bridge Division of the Department of Local Infrastructure Development and Agricultural Roads (DoLIDAR) said.
Once completed, some of the suspension bridges shall replace tuins, makeshift cables used to cross rivers.
Engineer Humakanta Mishra of the Division shares that there are 140 bridges under construction across the country at present.
According to him, 90 per cent of the bridges to be completed by this fiscal year are in the hilly region.
Mishra adds that the DoLIDAR will meet its target for bridge construction except in the cases of land disputes, adding that disputes could occur over the site where the bridges have to be built in private land.
He states that the suspension bridges are being constructed in the locations where the road access is not likely in the immediate future. “The sites with no access to road are selected for suspension bridge construction for some years,” he says.
The DoLIDAR constructs the suspension bridges on its own if they are more than 120 metres in length while the concerned local governments take this responsibility if such bridges are within the length of 120 metres.
