Oli, Nepal hold talks

Prime Minister and Chairman of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) KP Sharma Oli and NCP senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal held one-on-one talks on Wednesday. According to the sources, the meeting lasted for four hours at the prime minister’s residence in Baluwatar where the leaders tried to clear the difference between them. A source claimed that PM Oli told leader Nepal that people were trying to intensify differences between the two. Leader Nepal had been expressing discontent with Oli for ‘unilaterally’ deciding on the party unification and political appointments.

Bangladeshi President meets counterpart, PM and senior politicians

President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid held a meeting at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas, on Wednesday afternoon. The discussion was held on issues of bilateral interest and various aspects of bilateral relations between the two countries. On the occasion, President Bhandari, on behalf of Nepali people, Nepal government and on her own, thanked Bangladeshi President Hamid for the visit.

President Hamid expressed happiness for the opportunity of Nepal visit and reminded that then political leadership had moral support to Bangladesh on its independence movement. President Hamid also met Prime Minister Oli, NCP cochair Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

281 file nomination for by-elections

A total of 281 candidates have filed their nomination for 48 posts in the by-elections scheduled for November 30. According to the Election Commission, the nomination has been filed for 48 posts at 44 local units of 35 districts. By-elections are taking place to the post of a mayor of a sub-metropolitan city, three rural municipality chairpersons, one vice-chair of rural municipalities and 43 ward chairpersons. Of those who filed their candidacy, 217 are from political parties and 64 are independent candidates. Similarly, the number of women filing their nomination is 26.

22,000 security personnel to manage SAG

Around 22,000 security personnel are being mobilised during the South Asian Games being held in Nepal from December 1 to 10. A six-member security management committee led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sarbendra Khanal has been formed in view of security of the tournament.

DIG Deepak Thapa, Armed Police Force DIG Chandra Prakash Gautam, Director of National Investigation Department Laxman Gurung, and Brigadier General of the Nepal Army Himanshu Khadka are the members in the team. Similarly, a senior official of the National Sports Council Fanindra Paudel has been appointed as the secretary of the committee.

Around 8,000 people including 5,000 players, coaches, and assistants from Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Bhutan will participate in the event.

India gives Rs 3.1 billion for reconstruction

India has given Rs 3.1 billion for the reconstruction of buildings damaged due to the 2015 earthquake. This is the third instalment provided by India. The funds will be distributed to 50,000 earthquake surviving families in Nuwakot and Gorkha. In 2015, India had pledged to give $100 million. This is the final instalment of that pledge. Until now, India had provided Rs 6.9 billion ($69 million).

Writ filed at SC demanding solution to border dispute

A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday demanding that the government seek a solution to the border dispute through a diplomatic channel. Advocates Kanchan Krishna Neupane and Sujit KC filed a writ at the apex court naming the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Minister, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Defence among others as defendants. The writ had demanded a mandamus order to the government for regaining lands encroached by India in Sutsa, Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limiyadhura.
